This position works as part of the Link Journal Committee to support the operation and publication of Link, The Journal of Higher Education Web Professionals.

Link publishes, in a way that’s both informative and fun, high-quality content by well-qualified web professionals working in higher-ed. We’ve tackled topics as diverse as mobile integration, the latest in social media, and successful project management.

The Vice Publisher will work closely with the Publisher and Chief Editor roles to take Link articles from story ideas to published content.

Responsibilities

  • Assign tasks in the project management system and follow up with assignees to ensure they are completed accurately and on time.
  • Facilitate and attend Link Journal Committee monthly meetings:
    • Discuss agenda items with the chair and help with related documentation.
    • Ensure meeting notes are taken and shared.
    • Coordinate with the chair for setting action items and following up with members.
  • Aid in recruiting and developing committee members as needed.
  • Serve in place of the chair as needed.
  • Contribute ideas for content to be published by Link.
  • Adhere to the Association’s style guide, which follows AP Style.
  • Facilitate an environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

Qualifications

Required

  • Good writing and editing skills.
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines.
  • An interest in pitching, writing and producing engaging content for Link Journal.
  • Membership in the association, which can be fulfilled at application. (Free general membership for higher education professionals would meet this requirement.)

Preferred

  • Skilled in project management, including how to plan and execute projects with a team.
  • Previous experience writing for a publication, website or other outlet.
  • Editing experience.
  • Experience interviewing sources for articles or other types of content.
  • Familiarity with AP style and web writing best practices.
  • Working understanding or willingness to learn the basics of WordPress.

Estimated time commitment

  • The Vice Publisher is expected to virtually attend monthly meetings.
  • The time commitment for committee work varies, with a minimum of 3-4 hours per month and a peak commitment of 10 hours per month, as estimated below.

 

Length of appointment

One year as vice chair with the expectation to become chair once that position is vacated.
