Creating Accessibility Ecosystems: Institutional Scaffolding for Design and Content

Creating an accessible website or app is not an accidental feat. It requires an always growing skillset, and skills require time to build as well as ongoing support to continue to refine and sharpen. The work also does not happen on an island. Whether we’re creating a new marketing campaign or a new online course, countless influences that are out of our control drive decisions throughout our design and implementation processes.

Institutions must create ecosystems that provide the guidance and support required to keep everyone going in the same direction. This session will highlight tools and processes that help to make accessibility into a sustainable effort across campus. We will introduce things that work at the project, product, and institutional levels and discuss where accessibility can fit into what you’re already using and doing. We’ll build up to an overview of WebAIM’s Strategic Accessibility Framework and an introduction to the four Indicators of accessibility success. Let’s work toward accessibility at institutional scale, starting wherever you can right now.
