The Marketing and Communications Lead is responsible for developing marketing communications content for distribution across multiple channels, and developing the overall plan and timeline. This role collaborates and provides oversight for the social media coordinator, photo coordinator and designer roles to develop cohesive communications that generate awareness, help drive registrations and engage the event’s audience.

Responsibilities

Before the event

  • Create the event communication plan and marketing schedule. 
  • Maintain and represent the HighEdWeb voice and tone in all responses and shared content.
  • Update conference web sitemap. Develop content for conference web pages, including identifying image assets for inclusion. Work with the platform lead to update the website.
  • Create content for any print items, such as postcards, letters or brochures. Work with the designer to execute production.
  • Review existing content and create new content for marketing emails, for all identified purposes and audiences. Create the marketing emails in the email marketing platform.
  • Review existing content and create new content for attendee relations emails. Work with the platform lead to create and send the emails.
  • Coordinate with the designer to ensure presenter cards, signage, printed materials, general session slides and any other needs are accurate, effective and delivered in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate with the social media coordinator to establish use of official hashtags and to  develop and implement social marketing campaigns, including advertising techniques
  • Meet regularly with the event planning committee.
  • Serve as a member of the Association Marketing and Communications Committee to coordinate conference efforts as part of the overall Association editorial calendar.

During the event

  • Assist with conference setup (AV, bag stuffing, etc.).
  • Attend all committee meetings.
  • Help arrange and manage day of mar/comms staffing as needed.
  • Send official attendee communications throughout the event.

After the event

  • Share post-event materials and information as appropriate, including conference eval reminder.

Qualifications

Required

  • Membership in the association, which can be fulfilled at application. (Free general membership for higher education professionals would meet this requirement.)
  • Experience as a marketing/communications manager for an organization or business
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Organizational and planning skills
  • Knowledge of social media platforms, including best practices and promotional opportunities (inc. targeted paid campaigns)
  • Understanding of organizational branding and how to further it on social
  • Proficient in content strategy theory and application
  • Displays working knowledge of communication and marketing best practices
  • Proven ability to effectively promote a brand using common practices including, but not limited to: audience segmentation in advertising, email communication, and written content
  • Strong written communicator across different formats (i.e. social media, blogs)

Preferred

  • Work experience in a public relations environment.
  • Experience coordinating an integrated communications team.
  • Previous or current work experience at a higher education institution.
  • Ability to work with project management/team communication platforms such as Slack, Clickup, etc.
  • Google Drive proficiency.

Estimated time commitment

  • As a member of the planning committee, this position is expected to virtually attend monthly meetings
  • The time commitment for committee work varies, with a minimum of 1-2 hours per month and a peak commitment of 1 hour/day the week prior to the conference and will be continuously involved monitoring and updating social media during the conference

Length of appointment

Up to 12 months with the option to renew for a subsequent term
