The troll’s toll: Identifying and managing hostile social media moments

Red Stapler Winner

best in Track

Social media can be exhausting for us all, and this is worsened by those who use the platforms as an outlet for their negativity, often choosing to take their frustrations out on the institution whose handle you operate on a daily basis. Trolls still exist, and sometimes users truly have no intent but to stir commotion and create fruitless discourse, making your job harder. But sometimes, discerning between one of these trolls and a member of your campus community with genuine criticisms and concerns can make all the difference for everyone involved.

What do you do when one of your own students or faculty are continuously sounding off in your mentions? How do you take care of yourself when a sudden barrage of questions and demands on social media threaten to derail your work? How do you help give a face to the brand you represent in a way that will humanize you and those who engage negatively with your content?

This presentation will help you make the most of these situations and allow you to pay the troll’s toll without letting the trolls take their toll on you.
