The Vice Chair works with the Chair to help lead week-to-week operations for the Volunteer Committee. This includes being a leader and sounding board for committee members, keeping the committee organized through Slack, Google Drive, and ClickUp, aiding recruitment efforts, and supporting the broader volunteer community.

This role is a fantastic leadership opportunity and ideal for someone who loves bringing people together and helping them grow. You will have a variety of opportunities to network, learn new skills, participate in strategy discussions, and support the HighEdWeb community.

The Vice Chair is trained for and typically becomes the next committee Chair at the end of their term.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a committee leader to help manage volunteer operations.
  • Assign tasks in the project management software and follow up with committee members who may need support or more time to complete tasks.
  • Assist the Chair in planning for and running monthly committee meetings.
    • Ensure meeting notes are taken and shared.
    • Discuss agenda items with the Chair, and help with related documentation.
    • Coordinate with the Chair for setting action items and following up with committee members.
  • Aid in volunteer outreach, recruitment strategies, and onboarding as needed.
  • Serve in place of the Chair as needed.
  • Facilitate an environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

Qualifications

Required

  • Membership in the association, which can be fulfilled at application. (Free general membership for higher education professionals would meet this requirement.)
  • Ability to engage diverse communities and build relationships.
  • Strong organization, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Thinks beyond the Volunteer Committee, and thinks in terms of the goals for the Association overall.
  • Familiarity with HighEdWeb.

Preferred

  • Skilled in project management, including how to plan and execute projects with a team.
  • Previous service on a HighEdWeb committee, or committee of a similar nature at their institution.
  • Demonstrates active listening
  • Ability to work with team communication platforms like Slack.
  • Proficiency with ClickUp or similar project management tools.
  • Proficiency with Google Drive.

(Training is provided for all software or systems committee members may use.)

Estimated Time Commitment

  • Committee members are expected to virtually attend monthly meetings, which are up to 1 hour, once per month.
  • Additionally, this role may require a minimum of 2-3 hours per month for regular committee work, with a peak time commitment of 4-6 hours per month depending on the projects of the month.

Length of Appointment

Up to two years as Vice Chair with the expectation to become Chair once that position is vacated.

Annual and/or regional conference attendance is not required, and conference registration is not waived for this position.
