A Community Group Leader works as part of the Membership Committee, on the Community Groups Subcommittee, and manages a community group.  

Community groups typically have two co-leaders with staggered terms. Some groups have alternative leadership models, such as three leads (outgoing, current, incoming).

Responsibilities

  • Inviting, facilitating and managing the community group’s online group discussion channel in Slack. This includes posting topic-related news, issues, policies, practices, questions and solutions within your unique discussion forum. 
  • Planning regular or occasional community group online engagement opportunities, such as webinars or meetups.
  • Managing and leading any community group projects (such as content development).
  • Planning and leading the community group’s in-person meeting at the Annual Conference. Leaders who are unable to attend the conference are responsible for identifying and confirming an alternative from the community group community to lead the in-person session.
  • Identifying new leaders and assisting with onboarding.
  • Periodically reviewing group activity, making recommendations, and sharing issues and concerns with association staff.
  • Filling out the annual community group survey, which provides information about your community group activities for the year.
  • Facilitate an environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

Qualifications

Required

  • Membership in the association, which can be fulfilled at application. (Free general membership for higher education professionals would meet this requirement.)
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate and work comfortably with others.
  • Familiarity with the Association.
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines.

Preferred

  • Expertise and knowledge of the community group topic
  • Previous volunteer experience
  • Previous or current work experience at a higher education institution
  • Ability to work with project management/team communication platforms such as Slack, Clickup, etc.
  • Google Drive proficiency.

Estimated time commitment

  • Volunteers should be available for virtual monthly meetings. 
  • The time commitment for this position varies from 4-8 hours per month.

Length of appointment

  • One-two years

Conference attendance

Annual conference attendance is required. Conference registration is waived for this position.
