Engaging online learners through documentary filmmaking

For the past 100 years, Harvard Business School has used the case method in the classroom to prepare students for challenging leadership roles. Since 2014, HBS Online has worked to bring the case method online to reach leaders wherever they are — in the world, in their careers and in their lives.

In 2021, HBS Online took the online case method a step further. In collaboration with the world’s leading faculty at HBS, the HBS Online team crafted engaging documentary-style video cases that follow the stories of two CEOs grappling with change and innovation in large, stagnant organizations. The new digital storytelling approach initiates thoughtful discussions between participants on leadership decision-making processes and drives home key takeaways that learners can apply to current or future leadership roles.

In this session, hear from the lead content and creative developers of HBS Online’s Organizational Leadership course as they share a behind-the-scenes glimpse into what it took to create a truly unique learning experience.
